Glossary of Satellite TV Terms:
DBS -- Direct Broadcast Satellite.
digital cable -- With digital cable, cable operators are able to offer greater choice and quality than is possible with analog television. Cable operators use digital technology to compress video signals, allowing more than one program service to be carried in the bandwidth space normally required for one analog program service. Typically, the signal is sent to the home and decompressed in the set-top box for display on the television.
Digital cable can provide a host of new services, such as video-on-demand, interactive television and commercial-free CD-quality music. Digital television also allows cable operators and program networks to offer high-definition television (HDTV), which offers a movie theater-like viewing experience, complete with Dolby® Digital sound and a resolution of either 1,280 or 1,920 active horizontal pixels by 720 or 1,080 active scanning lines respectively.
DSS -- Specific reference to the DBS system offered by DIRECTV/USSB.
DTH broadcast satellite -- Direct-to-Home Broadcast Satellite. DirecTV and USSB's satellites are manufactured by Hughes. Echostars' satellite are manufactured by Lockheed Martin. These satellites are in a geostationary orbit about 22,800 miles above the earth in various orbital slots within the Clarke Belt.
DVB -- Digital Video Broadcast - system offered by Echostar.
DVR -- digital video recorder. A hardware device that records broadcast television programming in a digital format. A DVR often saves video to a buffer, which enables viewers to pause a live broadcast or replay video from the buffer.
encrypt -- Literally, to convert (as information) from one system of communication into another; to convert (a message) into code. Encryption is based on the science of cryptography, which has been used throughout history.
Before the digital age, the biggest users of cryptography were governments, particularly for military purposes. The existence of coded messages has been verified as far back as the Roman Empire. But most forms of cryptography in use these days rely on computers, simply because a human-based code is too easy for a computer to crack.
geostationary satellite -- A satellite having an equatorial orbit requiring an angular velocity the same as that of the earth so that the position of a satellite in such an orbit is fixed with respect to the earth.
hard drive -- The mechanism that reads and writes data on a hard disk. A hard disk is a magnetic disk on which you can store your video data. Storage of video on the hard drive is permanent until you delete them.
HDTV signal -- HDTV is high-resolution Digital Television (DTV) combined with Dolby Digital? surround sound that allows you to feel the sound. This combination creates a vastly superior image with state of the art sound. HDTV requires new production and transmission equipment for the Broadcaster, as well as new equipment for reception by the consumer.
LNBF -- The Low Noise Blockdown Feedhorn amplifies the signal collected on the parabolic antenna (dish). It works on 13V of power which is supplied by the satellite receiver. A single LNBF will feed one receiver, and a dual LNBF will feed two or more receivers.
LNB -- The Low Noise Blockdown amplifier performs the same functions as the LNBF.
MPEG-2 -- Latest specific data transmission protocol (format) developed by the Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG). It is a more advanced protocol than MPEG-1 due primarily its all-digital transmission of data at between 4 and 9 megabits/second (Mbit/sec). Several other enhancements over MPEG-1 are also realized. MPEG formating is the specific formating in which data is transmitted to satellites, transmitted back to earth, and interpreted by set-top units.
On-screen Program Guide -- This interactive feature allows the user to access and scroll through complete program listings right on his/her television screen, in most cases up to a week in advance.
One-Touch Recording -- With the touch of one button on the remote, the user can create multiple time recordings of future programs in the on-screen guide. The satellite receiver will control the VCR, starting and stopping the recording at the proper times.
operating system -- This is the most important program that runs on a computer (including intelligent boxes like DVRs). Every general-purpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs. Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from external devices, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the hard disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as video.
Parental Lockout Control -- Allows user to set a password to control access to programming based on channel, rating or content.
Program Browsing -- Allows user to scroll through program guide while still watching current channel.
Satellite -- Equipment in orbit that can transmit signals between station and distributor) or (distributor and homeowner); the signals can be analog or digital; each satellite usually has the capacity to transmit a number of different signals simultaneously.
Satellite Dish -- Receives the transmissions being sent from satellites; Distributors have dishes to receive the transmissions from the broadcast stations; Howeowners have dishes to receive transmissions that have been retransmitted by the distributors.
server -- A computer or device on a central network that manages network resources. For example, a file server is a computer and storage device dedicated to storing files. Servers are often dedicated, meaning that they perform no other tasks besides their server tasks.
TiVo® -- TiVo® is a service that operates a digital video recorder (DVR), which is like a VCR but with a hard drive. It digitally records up to 140 hours of your favorite shows automatically, every time they're on, without the hassles of videotape.
